You will be funded by NSFAS to study at any Colleges listed below if you meet the following requirements:

NSFAS Requirements for College Studies

To qualify for NSFAS funding, you must follow these requirements:

  1. You must be a South African citizen – Remember, NSFAS is only available to South African citizens. If you don’t have a valid South African ID, you can’t apply.
  2. You must be studying or planning to study an undergraduate course – If you’re already studying or planning to start an undergraduate qualification, you qualify for funding. However, you can’t apply if you’ve already finished any tertiary qualification.
  3. You must be enrolled at a public tertiary institution – Make sure you’re applying to or already studying at a public university or TVET college within South Africa. Private institutions aren’t eligible for NSFAS funding, so it’s a no-no to apply if you’re at one.
  4. You must meet the household income requirements – Your household income must not exceed:
    • R350,000 per year (for general applicants).R600,000 per year if you’re living with a disability. If you started studying before 2018, R122,000 per year is the income limit for you.
If you’re a SASSA grant recipient, you qualify automatically, but you still must meet other requirements.

Unfortunately, if you don’t fit into one of these categories, you can’t get funding.

Documents You Need for Your NSFAS Application for College Studies

To complete your application, you must submit the following documents:

  1. Your cellphone number and email address – NSFAS needs a way to reach you, so make sure you provide working contact details.

  3. Certified copies of your parents’, guardian’s, or spouse’s IDs – If applicable, you must provide their ID copies, or death certificates if they’ve passed away.
  4. Proof of income – You must submit your IRP5 or payslips if you’re working, or your parents’, guardian’s, or spouse’s proof of income (unless you’re a SASSA recipient, where no proof is required).
