Does UJ Offer Medicine and Surgery?
No, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) does not currently offer medicine courses that will make you a qualified doctor. UJ doesn’t have a Medical School as yet, like its competitors in Gauteng, such as Wits, and the University of Pretoria.
What UJ offers in related to Health Studies, are courses which are focused on complementary medicine and other health sciences programs. The Department of Complementary Medicine at UJ offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in acupuncture, homeopathy, and phototherapy.
On the other hand, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) offers a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with Physiology major. This degree can be a pathway for students who want to continue with their medical studies. This is because, the course provides a strong foundation in the biological and physiological sciences, which are critical for medical school.
Pathway to Medical School
Credit Transfer: As explained earlier, UJ does not have the MBChB degree, however, the student can use the BSc in Physiology as a base for applying for other medical universities such as the University of the Witwatersrand or the University of Cape Town. Such schools may accept prior learning and prior credits that student have completed, which may make it possible for the student to complete their medical school faster or to make it less intense.
Preparation for Admission: UJ’s physiology graduates may be more than capable of handling the selection process that is common in most medical schools such as writing of exams, interviews, and reviewing of academic achievements.
