Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care Requirements

On this page, I have listed all the Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care requirements from Six institutions that offer Emergency Medical Care Certificate courses in South Africa. The list includes both universities and private colleges, with the relevant application links for each.

It is worth noting that, UJ and SMU don’t accept Math Literacy subject for this course. They want pure Mathematics! However, other institutions on this list do accept Maths Literacy subject.

The Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care is normally done within 12-month period.

1. University of Johannesburg (UJ)

Below are the requirements for a Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care at the University of Johannesburg:

  • Minimum Admission Requirements:
    • APS Score: Minimum of 21 (excluding Life Orientation)
    • Subject Requirements:
      • English: Level 5
      • Mathematics: Level 3 (Mathematical Literacy not accepted)
      • Physical Sciences: Level 3
      • Life Sciences: Level 4
  • Selection Criteria:
    • Academic merit (APS)
    • Structured personal interview
    • Phobia evaluation
    • Medical examination
    • Physical fitness and swimming proficiency evaluation
    • English proficiency evaluation
    • Previous appropriate experience (recommended)

2. Netcare Education

Below are the requirements for a Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care at Netcare Education:

  • Admission Requirements:
    • National Senior Certificate with Higher Certificate endorsement
      • English: Level 3
      • Mathematics: Level 3 or Mathematical Literacy: Level 6
      • Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences: Level 3
      • Additional Subjects: Level 3 each
      • Minimum Points: 18 (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Pass a medical and physical fitness evaluation
    • 40 hours of voluntary duties in Emergency Medical Services (recommended)
  • Selection Criteria:
    • Language and numeracy assessment
    • Personal interview
    • Physical fitness and swimming proficiency assessment

3. Mediclinic

Below are the requirements for a Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care at Mediclinic:

  • Admission Requirements:For Senior Certificate (Before 2008):
    • English: Minimum D (Standard Grade) or E (Higher Grade)
    • Mathematics: Minimum D (Standard Grade) or E (Higher Grade)
    • Biology and/or Physical Sciences: Minimum D (Standard Grade) or E (Higher Grade)
    For National Senior Certificate with Higher Certificate endorsement:
    • English: Level 4
    • Mathematics: Level 3 or Mathematical Literacy: Level 6
    • Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences: Level 3
    • Minimum Points: 19 (22 if Mathematical Literacy applies), excluding Life Orientation
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Pass medical and physical fitness evaluations
    • 40 hours of voluntary duties in Emergency Medical Services (recommended)
    • Eligible candidates will participate in an interview and assessments
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    • Valid Matric with required APS score
    • 25 years or older
    • Registered Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) or Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA)
    • Minimum of 5 years operational experience
    • Currently employed by an Emergency Medical Service
    • Pass theory and clinical assessments

4. ER24

Below are the requirements for a Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care at ER24:

  • Admission Requirements:
    • National Senior Certificate with Higher Certificate endorsement
      • English: Level 3
      • Mathematics: Level 3 or Mathematical Literacy: Level 6
      • Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences: Level 3
      • Additional Subjects: Level 3 each
      • Minimum Points: 18 (excluding Life Orientation)

5. Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)

Below are the requirements for a Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care at CPUT:

  • Admission Requirements:
    • Mathematics: Level 3 or Maths Literacy: Level 6 or Technical Maths: Level 4
    • Life Sciences or Physical Sciences: Level 3
    • English: Level 3
    • APS Score: 26

6. Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU)

Below are the requirements for a Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care at SMU:

  • Admission Requirements:Criteria 1: Senior Certificate (Before 2010):
    • English: E (Higher Grade) or D (Standard Grade)
    • Mathematics: E (Higher Grade) or D (Standard Grade)
    • Biology or Physical Science: E (Higher Grade) or D (Standard Grade)
    Criteria 2: National Certificate (Vocational):
    • English: 50%
    • Mathematics: 50%
    • Life Sciences or Physical Science: 50%
    Criteria 3: National Senior Certificate with Higher Certificate endorsement:
    • English: Level 3
    • Mathematics: Level 3 or Mathematical Literacy: Level 4
    • Life Sciences or Physical Sciences: Level 3
    • Additional Subjects: Level 3 each
    • Minimum Total Points: 15 or 16 (excluding Life Orientation)
