Do you know that NSFAS will not fund you twice for your studies? Once you are funded, you better grab the opportunity with both hands and complete your studies. Or else, you wont get a second chance of funding.
However, you are allowed to change the courses and institutions, provided that the new course falls within the funded category. NSFAS only funds curricular courses.
Below we have listed various rules that NSFAS uses to back up the decision of not funding students twice:
One Qualification Rule: NSFAS will usually only fund you for one undergraduate qualification. This means, once you finish your degree or diploma, NSFAS won’t fund you for another one.
Funding Duration Limit: NSFAS will only cover the official time for your course. For example, if you’re doing a three-year degree, NSFAS will only fund you for those three years. If it takes longer, you’ll have to cover the extra time yourself.
No Postgraduate Funding: NSFAS does not fund postgraduate studies. So, if you want to study further after finishing your degree, like getting a master’s, you’ll need to find other ways to pay for it.
Exception for Upgraded Qualifications: If you started with a lower qualification, like a higher certificate, and then move up to a degree or diploma, NSFAS can keep funding you. They see it as part of your same educational journey.
NSFAS Policy on Changing Courses: If you decide to change courses in your first year, NSFAS might still fund you. But once you finish your qualification, they won’t fund you if you want to start a completely new course.
Requirement for Academic Performance: You need to pass your courses to keep getting NSFAS funding. If you fail too many subjects, they might stop funding you.
No Second Chance for Graduates: Once you have graduated with NSFAS funding, you can’t apply for funding again for another qualification.
NSFAS Targets First-Time Entrants: NSFAS is mainly focused on helping first-time university students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their goal is to help as many new students as possible, instead of funding multiple qualifications for the same person.
