On this page, we try to explain how students can pursue teaching from TVET colleges, based on the courses offered. The main teaching courses offered at TVET colleges focus on childhood education and education. You won’t automatically become a fully qualified teacher by simply graduating from a TVET college. You can, however, obtain an N4 – N6 Educare or Early Childhood Development (ECD) Diploma. After completing the N6 level, you should apply for Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunity. This will give you practical experience by working in a real-world early childhood education setting, such as a preschool or daycare centre, for 18 months. You can then look for Preschool teaching vacancies.
Suppose you still want to pursue teaching further, aiming at being a fully qualified teacher who can teach at either primary or secondary levels. In that case, you should apply for a B.ed degree at any South African University. With your National Diploma and work experience, some universities may grant you credits for the courses you’ve already completed at the TVET level, allowing you to fast-track your degree.
