UP Online Application 2025 Guide

The University of Pretoria (UP) has opened its 2025 online application cycle, welcoming both local and international students. This guide outlines all the necessary steps and requirements to complete your UP online application and secure a place in your chosen programme.

Step 1: Prepare for the Application

Before diving into the application, it’s essential to go over UP’s guidelines and requirements.

  1. Choose Your Programme: Select a study programme that aligns with your academic goals. Each faculty’s specific admission requirements are detailed in faculty brochures. These brochures provide in-depth information on courses, programme-specific requirements, and selection guidelines. Access the brochures via www.up.ac.za/programmes under the “Undergraduate” section.
  2. Check Tuition and Residence Fees: For an overview of tuition and residence costs, visit UP’s fees page. This page offers fee quotations, payment methods, and information on family discounts and bursary policies.
  3. Watch the Application Demo: UP offers a step-by-step online application demonstration video. This tutorial can help you understand the process from start to finish. You can watch it here.

Step 2: Start Your Online Application

The application process opens on 1 April 2024, so it’s best to apply early, as all programmes have limited spots. Here’s how to begin:

  1. Apply Online: Complete your application form at www.up.ac.za/apply.
  2. Indicate Programme Choices: The form allows for two programme choices. If you need to add a third or change your choices after submission, email ssc@up.ac.za.
  3. Meeting Admission Requirements: Ensure that your selected programmes align with UP’s minimum requirements and faculty selection guidelines. Certain programmes may not accept applications if they are listed as a second choice, so consult your faculty’s brochure carefully.

Step 3: Residence Placement and Accommodation

If you’re interested in living on campus, you can apply for residence placement as part of your UP online application:

  • Residence Section in Application: Complete the residence section to indicate your interest.
  • Early Applications Recommended: Accommodation is limited and competitive, so the earlier you apply, the better.
  • Reservation Fee: If you receive a residence offer, you must pay a reservation levy within 30 days of placement. The fee amount and payment instructions will be detailed in your placement letter. For more information, visit UP’s accommodation page.

Step 4: Application Status and Student Portal

After submitting your application:

  1. Temporary Password and T-Number: UP will send your temporary password and T-number to the email address you provided. Be sure to check your email regularly.
  2. Student Number: You’ll receive your student number within 10 working days, which you can use to log in to the UP Student Portal and track your application status.

For more details and to ensure you’re on the right track, refer to UP’s online application page.

Step 5: Apply for Bursaries and Loans

UP provides a range of financial support options through bursaries and loans. Here’s a breakdown of the available resources:

  • UP Bursaries and Loans: Apply via the UP Student Portal or directly on the UP Fees and Funding page. Remember, late applications are not accepted, so plan ahead!
  • UP Sports Bursaries: For sports-specific funding, visit UP Sports Bursaries to check eligibility and requirements.
  • NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme): NSFAS provides funding for eligible South African students. To apply, go to www.nsfas.org.za for comprehensive information.
  • Fundi Loans: Previously known as Eduloan, Fundi offers student loans that cover tuition, books, laptops, accommodation, and more, with fixed monthly instalments. To apply, the borrower (student, parent, or guardian) must be in full-time employment or own a registered business. Visit www.fundi.co.za for more information.
